PERMITS & LICENSING

Drivers Permit

Age 15

As early as age 15, a student may enroll in a driving class and receive a waiver to get their permit without taking the test. This waiver can be issued as early as ten days before a class starts so that the student can get a head start on practicing. They will need to take with them a birth certificate, picture id, $20, and a parent (see the DOL website for other forms of acceptable id.) They will be given an eye test and receive their permit. Students must have their permit for six months before getting their license.

Age 15½+

If the student is 15½ years old, they may go to the Department of Licensing and take a 25 question knowledge test. They will need to take with them a birth certificate, picture id, $20, and a parent (see the DOL website for other forms of acceptable id.) They will be given an eye test and receive their permit after passing the test.

Drivers License

In order to get your license you will need to present a signed certificate showing you have passed an approved traffic safety education course, have a parent or guardian grant permission and confirm your driving practice, pass a knowledge test, and pass a vision screening.

When you get your license you will be required to prove you are a Washington State resident, and that you have proper identification. You will also, be required to provide your social security number, or sign a declaration if you don't have one.
